At least three people including Quantum Logistics boss Matthew Kayamunyu, 39,  have Tuesday afternoon been charged with murder of social worker Kenneth Watmon Akena at Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court in Kampala.

The two other suspects are Kanamunyu’s girlfriend Cynthia Munwangari, 26, and his brother Joseph Kanyamunyu, 40.

“You are all charged with one offence of murder contrary to Section 188 and 189 of the Penal Code Act,” said the Grade One magistrate Noah Sajjabi as he read out the charges to the accused.

“… and it is alleged that all of you and others still at large on 12,November along Kampala -Jinja road near Malik Car bond opposite UMA main gat; with malice aforethought caused the death of Kenneth Akena.”

The trio told court they understood the charges against them but were not allowed to take plea because it is a capital offence only tried by the High Court.

State prosecutor Ann Ntimba however told court investigations were still ongoing.

The suspects were remanded to Luzira till December 6, 2016.

The murder of Akena shook the nation almost two weeks ago. It was alleged Akena was shot by Mathew Kanyamunyu following a dispute at Lugogo.

The suspects who have been in police detention since December 13 did not appear shaken by the case that has dominated headlined in the past days.

At 2:24, a black police truck registration number UP 5439 arrived with four occupants, among them two ladies in the hind seats.

These included Kanyamunyu’s girlfriend Munwangari who looked smart and jolly as she disembarked the vehicle.

“Are you done? It is okay,” she asked the swarm of journalists who had gathered around the vehicle.

At 2:40pm another police patrol vehicle arrived with three occupants in the front seat – among them Joseph Kanyamunyu who was handcuffed.Meanwhile, 13 minutes later, another patrol car arrived, carrying the prime suspect Mathew Kanyamunyu.

Smartly clad is a brown blazer coat, white shirt and his trademark glasses, Kanyamunyu pocketed as he walked to the court cells.The trio looked calm throughout the short court session

At some moment, Mathew Kanyamunyu was seen being hugged by his girlfriend after being read the charges.

Among other people at the court included the relatives of Akena and those of the accused.
